Weekly Winners (5-2016)

Last weekend's Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch shook up the markets this week. Many, many Eldrazi cards have spiked this week. So, once again, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Eldrazi Obligator +554.6% ($2.16)

Eldrazi Obligator

This card was a $0.33 rare last week, but spiked this week, due to extreme good results of the new Eldrazi deck in Modern. Pro Tour OGW winner Jiachen Tao ran 3 copies of Eldrazi Obligator in his decklist. Aside from that, Andrew Brown (#6) and Adam Boyd (#77) added the card in their decks.

Since Eldrazi seems to become the new dominant deck in Modern, after the banning of Splinter Twin, and Birting Pod before that. The recent bannings did make this last Pro Tour more interesting, but if Eldrazi maintains the same level of dominance (6 of the top 8 decks were Eldrazi) in upcoming tournaments, it seems to be likely that Wizards feels the need to intervene with bannings once again.

#2 Worship +378.3% ($11.24)

Worship

Last week, Worship was in the Weekly Winners too. At that time, only a few of the many printings really spiked. The other printings followed this week. We see this a lot when a buyout happens on a certain printing of a card. In the case of Worship, I suspect that the card will dwindle in price over the coming months, but will retain a substantial higher pricetag than before.

At this time, there is a price difference between the different printings of the card, I combined them in the graph below:

#3 Endless One +359.6% ($4.55)

Endless One

Endless One is another Eldrazi piece that picked up value as a result of the Pro Tour last weekend. A dollar rare before, Endless One bumped up to $5.95 this week and is now slowly losing value as people start buylisting the copies they got from their boosters. This reaction is visible in almost all spikes. The moment people realise they own a card they don't use that is now suddenly expensive, they are tempted to sell them to their LGS or webstore. Supply increases, prices drop a little.

When looking at the Pro Tour results, we can conclude that Endless One is a piece in 13 decks, including 5 of the top 8 finishes. No wonder the card is now in popular demand, driving up the price. But still, $4.55 is cheap for a card that sees widespread modern play. And there is the catch: Eldrazi performed extremely well in the Pro Tour, but other tournaments still have to prove the deck is here to stay. In all probability that is the case.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
