Weekly Winners (7-2016)

Last week, Wizards announced Eternal Masters, causing a lot of movement on Reserved List cards in the market. This week we saw a secondary market dominated by spikes from the reserved list that spiked, fell, and in some cases spiked again. Once again, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Meditate +705% ($23.84)

Meditate

I can be very short about this spike. Meditate was bought out because it is on the reserved list, has a unique ability, and is from a older set with a limited print run. There are no recent winning decks that contain the card, or new brews that use it. The card sees play in the Spiral Tide Legacy deck, but that is a low-tier deck that does not see a lot of play. Sometimes Meditate is seen in Vintage Storm Combo.

The timing of this spike has everything to do with the announcement of Eternal Masters. Since Wizards stated that they will not reprint anything from the reserved list, this means that they are still keeping their word, and are not changing the reserved list. While, on the other hand, other Eternal staples might get a bit cheaper because of the reprint.

Last week we saw spikes on key Eternal staples that are on the reserved list like Dual Lands, Mox Diamond and City of Traitors. This week, a lot of other cards on the reserved list spike and Meditate is one of them. Since speculators now know for sure -not that there was any real doubt- that Wizards will not change the reserved list, investing in cards that are on it becomes more interesting. On top of that, the fear of being left out is also a factor in this. People but into Meditate because it is a strong card on the reserved list, and they therefore expect a spike. And when you expect a spike, it is better to be ahead and buy it. Causing a spike. It is a self-furfilling prophecy.

#2 Magmatic Force +470.9% ($9.99)

Magmatic Force

This spike is quite the mystery, since it seems to be a random spike/ buyout. Sure, Magmatic Force sees play in commander and is a solid card, but does that warrant a spike like this? Probably not. At first, this seems like a regular buyout, but the cars was also among the top selling cards on Magic Card Market, which indicates that there is real demand for the card.

Probably it is a combination of 'real' demand and speculation. I have even heard that this card might be a buyout to manipulate PucaTrade prices. A few weeks ago I reported on rumors about manipulation of the TCG Mid price. This PucaTrade manipulation is something else, but seems a bit similar. From what I've heard is that the PucaTrade prices are based on the TCG mid price, so if the TCG price goes up, so does the PucaTrade price. This buyout seemed to target only TCG-stores, not Starcity Games or other non-TCG stores. The person doing the buyout sees the PucaTrade price rise, and then sends everyone that has the card on their wish list a much more expensive copy, getting a lot of profit from it in Puca Points. Absolutely scammy, but technically not illegal.

Magmatic Force's buyout sure looks like PucaTrade manipulation, but maybe there is more to the story. The card was printed only in Commander preconstructed decks, and therefore the print run of the card is very limited, making it a very rare card in comparison. It might have been a little to cheap for the play it sees, and the card seemed to be a decent candidate for a price correction.

Please take the rumors I have mentioned at just that: rumors. There have been some funky things going on over the past couple of months, especially concerning the TCG mid prices. Last I've heard is that TCGPlayer is aware of these rumors and is working on updates to deal with possible manipulation, so that is a good thing to hear. When I learn more, I will report it back to you.

#3 Scorched Ruins +421.7% ($18)

Scorched Ruins

This spike is because of the reserved list, but also because this land produces four colorless mana, and with the rules change and the addition of wastes, that means that the card also has new applications with Eldrazi. Scorched Ruins is not Modern legal, but it does see (some) play in EDH. That, and the fact that reserved list cards are popular investment targets make this card the #3 winner this week.

Cheap pickups

Allright already! A lot of people have asked me to bring back the cheap pickups. The reason I did not add them in the past few articles is because of the lack of interesting card that are really cheap to pickup. Since the last cheap pickup report was weeks ago, I will gladly share them with you this week.

Sinkhole ($24.73)
