#1 Oubliette +49.2% ($11.92)

Oubliette

Oubliette [Version 2] sees no competitive play, has no reprints and is not on the reserved list. But still, the card has won almost 50% in value over the past 7 days. And it's an interesting card at least, a piece of magic history that caught my eye a few months ago.

Essentially it's a highly overcosted Chain to the Rocks or Journey to Nowhere. But in black. It's the only black enchantment with a 'oblivion ring'-type ability. And don't forget the flavor of the card. It's an Arabian Nights (1993) enchantment with simple but archaic art. I mean, how cool is it to whip out your oubliette in a casual game?

For those of you wondering what the heck an oubliette is, here is a picture. It's a high dungeon with an opening (in most cases) only on top, trapping you inside with no means of escape. Becoming an oubliette resident would mean that you would never leave again. One way tickets only.

So I prefer getting Oubliette'd in MTG instead, with that slim chance that I could return to the battlefield someday, even with my aura's attached.

#2 The Abyss +34% ($224.50)

The Abyss

The Abyss: another oldie with some new value! In 7 days, this card gained $50 in value. It sees fringe play in Legacy. Some Pox and Tezzeret Control decks run it, as a oneoff, in their sideboard. And both of those decks see very little play in Legacy.

The spike of this card could be artificial, I have not found any other indication that The Abyss is part of a new kind of combo in Legacy, Vintage or EDH. These spikes are usually due to a price correction by stores.

If you look at the shame of the graph that it has a 'blocky', minecraft-like profile to it. That means that there is little trade, and when there is little trade, there are not that many different datapoints, hence the blocky graph. Also considering that The Abyss has a fairly unique effect and that it's on the reserved list could all be facts that it's price could be corrected.

Please let me know on twitter @MTGPeter; if you know other reasons for the spike on this card.

#3 Goblin Guide +29%  ($23.26)

Goblin Guide

Goblin Guide has spiked too this week. I expect that this card will drop in price a little this weekend, most spikes are followed by a rush of supply to cardstores, lowering the price a little.

Aside from that it's no big surprise that Goblin Guide gained some value. It sees play in Modern and Legacy and is a really aggressive turn-1 drop that has a drawback that is not always a drawback. When your opponent does not have land on top, he cannot profit from the trigger. But, knowing your top card is always an advantage, especially when you also play fetchlands.

Modern's Red Deck Wins is on the rise again, check out the graph in our metagame analytics section of the site. At the same time, Burn in Legacy is also gaining in popularity; a deck that also runs Goblin Guide. A card that burn players really need in matchups against other fast decks, like Storm Combo, Elves or Sneak & Show.

Loser of the week:  Battlefield Forge -7,4%  ($4.74)

Battlefield Forge

Cheap pickup of the week: Intuition  ($28)

Intuition

Intuition keeps going down. And it's no surprise. In Sneak & Show it was normal to run 3 or 4 copies. But now, most deck have only 1 intuition. The others? None at all. It's a powerful card, it helps you find your combo. And you can even use it to reset your library in a lategame situation by searching for Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, keeping one and shuffling the rest back, with the rest of your graveyard filled with cantrips, counters and businesspells.

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
