#1 Metalworker +128.7% ($30) ALL TIME HIGH

Metalworker

Metalworker has spiked and it was possible to see this one coming. It's been unbanned in EDH and it's on the reserved list, so all speculators jumped aboard this hype train.

Although it doesn't see that much play in Legacy and Vintage it is quite a powerhouse. Facing this card in play means you are about to lose the game in most cases. Of course, the card is played in a deck with only colorless cards. You (or your opponent) reveal your hand and off you go.

The card is from Urza's Destiny and on the reserved list, so it's a prime speculation target. The supply is limited and is therefore easy to control by buying the card up in masses.

For reference, check out the MUD decks in both Legacy and Vintage

#2 The Rack +100.3% +51.3% ($6.55 / $6)

The Rack

The Rack

The Rack spikes this week, and for the same reason I wrote about blackmail last week. Several people told me through Twitter and Reddit that a lot of people are experimenting with 8-rack, a modern deck. Check out last week's article for more on that deck.

Interestingly, only the Antiquities and Timeshifted copies of this card are now around $6. There are many $1 copies from revised and fourth edition left. Black borders seem to be so important to people that they are willing to play $5 extra. Check out the graph:

#3 Crackling Doom +74.5% ($2.60)

Crackling Doom

Crackling Doom is not released yet and therefore there is no precedent, only speculation. It's potentially a powerful card in Standard, but that depends on the overall power of the RWB color combination.

Also, with the release of the allied colored fetchlands in modern, it's potentially playable in modern. But, the card is probably too weak to be in the maindeck and will probably end up in sideboards, if played at all.  There are many other cards with similar, non targeted removal available. The big difference is that it always hits your opponent's biggest dude; barring the possibility to just sac a (fairly) useless creature instead.

In EDH this card is very fun. It deals with all your opponent's fatties and dealing them damage. Also, the RWB manacost should be no problem in midgame, when this card is most relevant.

In the current Legacy metagame this card won't see play. And it will never see play. The 3 CMC is simply too steep for a format that has almost every removal card available.

Loser of the week:  Legion Loyalist -10%  ($5)

Legion Loyalist

Legion Loyalist is this week's loser! It's your typical post-spike value loss that occurs with many cards.

Cheap pickup of the week: Personal Tutor  ($16.79)

Personal Tutor

Personal Tutor used to be a +$35 card, but you can now get your copy for $17. The card sees no competitive play recently, but it's a powerful card. Please note that Mystical Tutor is banned in Legacy and restricted in Vintage. But, Personal Tutor is legal in both formats, giving an opening to run a similar effect.

Sadly, the fact that you cannot search for an instant, topped by the fact that Personal Tutor is a sorcery makes it just not good enough to play. I have tested with it in Omnicience (Legacy) and Sneak & Show (Legacy), but it simply doesn't cut it. Also in other blue combo Legacy decks like High Tide the card just isn't good enough.

More from Peter:

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Ethereal Forager Stifle Allosaurus Shepherd

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

Shivan Dragon Sapphire Medallion Elvish Champion

Weekly Winners 2021 - 05

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
