Weekly Winners (4)

It should be no surprise to anyone that this edition of weekly winners will be (almost) only about the cards that were unbanned in Legacy and Modern on Monday. But, almost 4 days later, we see some of those initial spikes settling in. Like every week, just in time for FNM, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

Want to help me out? Pitch me a tweet when you see something interesting @MTGPeter

#1 Worldgorger Dragon +855.7% ($10.22)

Worldgorger Dragon

After the unbanning of Worldgorger Dragon a huge spike was visible the next day. A few days later we can see that the card is over it's initial top, and has fallen in price a little since yesterday. At this time it is hard to say whether the price will stay around the $10 mark, or if it will continue to go up (or even drop). It depends on the success the card has in the Legacy metagame.

Right after its unbanning, a lot of people started to create brews with the card. And for a good reason: you can create infinite mana and an infinite loop, flicker other cards you own in and out of play and even draw the game at will. A card that is waiting to get broken, again. My guess is that Wizards has already tried to make the most powerful brew with Worldgorger Dragon. I'd be cool if they would share some of their notes.

If you want to stay ahead of the curve, check out MTG The Source, one of the best forums to keep track of new developments. Beneath you see the two brews I have seen on the site so far. And please let me know on Twitter if you are brewing with Worldgorger Dragon yourself, I'm very keen to keep track of all possibilities!

UB Cunning Dragon

Reanimate WGD with Animate Dead with help of Intuition and Snapcaster Mage.
Oona, Queen of the Fae is the kill. Griselbrand is used to stop the infinite loop.

UBR Derpy Dragon

Reanimate WGD with Animate Dead and use ETB-triggers like Flayer of the Hatebound

#2 Golgari Grave-Troll RAV: +458.8% ($9.22) | DD: +500.7% ($9.07)

Golgari Grave-Troll

Just like Worldgorger Dragon, Golgari Grave-Troll had an huge initial spike, and is now losing a little value. Mostly the same story as with WGD. The price shot up right after the unban announcement, but since Dread Return is still banned in Modern, do not expect any explosive decks. Golgari Grave-Troll is better than Stinkweed Imp with an extra dredge, but also a lot harder to hardcast. If a deck would arise utilizing Golgari Grave-Troll, expect it to be in combination with Vengevine, rather than Bridge from Below.

#3 Scion of the Ur-Dragon +291.4% ($7.75)

Scion of the Ur-Dragon

Scion of the Ur-Dragon spiked on the day after Worldgorger Dragon was unbanned. This might be a coincidence, and it might not be. First, Scion of the Ur-Dragon will not see play in Legacy any time soon. And Worldgorger Dragon was legal in EDH all the time. So there should not be any particular connection between the cards. Especially when we expect a lot of dragons in the next set, called Dragons of Tarkir (there were no dragons in Dragon's Maze however ;-).

But, on the other hand, one could speculate that the unbanning of Worldgorger Dragon, focused a lot of attention on this particular dragon, with which you can create an infinite loop when reanimated with Animate Dead (or Dance of the Dead). People will start searching for ways to tutor into WGD (like intuition), to create the loop. Scion of the Ur-Dragon is a card that you can use to find other dragons, but it is not very helpful since it becomes a copy of the discarded card. So no luck.

But wait! A commander that searches for other dragons and becomes a copy of that card? And a dragon filled set is coming up? Might be a good idea to buy that Worldgorger Dragon!

But lets just follow Occams Razor again, since I'm probably reaching. Chances are that it is just a freaky coincidence.

Other post-ban movers:

Instead of the weekly loser, cheap pickups and other interesting movers, I'm giving you an update on banning related cards that could move. Some have changed in price like expected, others didn't. And some mentioned cards were not expected to move, but are interesting to keep in mind.
