Weekly Winners (5)

The release of Fate Reforged is starting to impact the metagame, with price changes as a result. I'm looking forward to the coming days and weeks and I wonder what other cards from FRF will spike. But now, just in time for FNM, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

Want to help me out? Pitch me a tweet when you see something interesting @MTGPeter

#1 Frontier Siege +113.4% ($3.18)

Frontier Siege

Frontier Siege is the number #1 winner when looking at the percentual price change. But please note that the card is under $5, so it will pop up in our interests fairly quickly. But for good reason. For Frontier Siege is finding its way into several Standard decks. Decks that have performed well during the last SCG Open that was held in Washington. Check them out:

The reason Frontier Siege is played should be fairly obvious. A 4CMC enchantment that gives you GG on each of your main phases is just very good. Sadly you can't spend your GGGG all in one place. It helps the deck ramp up to expensive spells like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.

Usually cards tend to be a bit overpriced shortly after their release, but in this case I think this should be a good time to get your playset, if you are planning to play Sultai, Bant or Mono Green in Standard.

#2 Tasigur, the Golden Fang +99.8% ($9.99)

Tasigur, the Golden Fang

Tasigur, the Golden Fang is, in my opinion, one of the most exiting cards printed in FRF. It already sees play in Standard, Modern and we even have 1 Legacy deck on file that runs it. The $9.99 price tag is a bit high for a card that still has to prove itself, but maybe it will even go up a little more.

The fact that this dude is considered good is it's delve-ability. A 4/5 for just B is very good. Even when you have to pay 1B a 4/5 is really nice to have. Consider Tarmogoyf which is a 4/5 most of the time anyway. Of course, Tasigur, the Golden Fang is far more restrictive, since you need to have a filled graveyard to play it. Also the fact that it's Legendary makes sure decks are less likely to play more than 2.

Tasigur, the Golden Fang's second ability is a nice extra, which allows you to dig for more good card and filling up your graveyard for more delve in the process. But, abilities that allow your opponent to choose what you get tend to be underwhelming. Your opponent will try to give you the least interesting card. But hey, you might get lucky. The upside is that your opponent can only return a nonland card.

Also, I'm keeping an eye on Legacy. I really wonder if Tasigur, the Golden Fang is competitive enough. Maybe people will use it as a cheap alternative to Tarmogoyf. But, Hooting Mandrills sees no play, and that is a potential 4/4 for G.

#3 Scrying Sheets +36.5% ($4.08)

Scrying Sheets

Scrying Sheets is a bit of a mystery to me. How can you make this card work to make it worthwhile to pay $4 a piece for it? I honestly don't know for sure.

I found a mention of a way how to use the card in a 2012 article on Quiet Speculation:

The real upgrades, though, are pricier. This deck could be supercharged with some combination of Scrying Sheets, Snow-Covered Forests, Thawing Glaciers and Deserted Temple. These lands fill your hand with lands, filter through your deck for bombs, or put lands directly into play while maintaining the same number of lands in hand for Sasaya.

If anyone else knows why this card is going up in price, please let me know!
Edit: branewalker posted an interesting explanation on the Reddit discussion thread. In it, he refers to this post on the EDH subreddit. And notes that earlier bumps seem to coincide with a good performance of Sked.
