Weekly Winners (17)

Sadly, this week proved to be quite uninteresting financially, with one exception: Vendilion Clique will be reprinted in MM2015. This week I will give you the 3 weekly winners and some more on Vendilion Clique. Once again, just in time for FNM, I present you the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Dragonlord Ojutai +45.6% ($28.03)

Dragonlord Ojutai

Dragonlord Ojutai has gotten a lot of love from pro players, and it is seeing a lot of competitive play. Back in March, Louis-Scott Vargas called it his favorite card from DTK, giving it the highest score in his constructed set review. Decks running Dragonlord Ojutai have performed well in Grand Prix Krakow and in many other tournaments

A good indicator of popularity and power is the spread of decks a card is played in, the more decks people are trying to cram it into, the better the indication we are dealing with a real powerhouse. At this time we have 9 decks on file that run the card. Aside from Esper Control, Jeskai Combo and UB Control, Dragonlord Ojutai is also (sometimes) played in Bant en Jeskai Tempo.

But I would also like to give off a warning. Dragonlord Ojutai is a good card, but is it really $28 good? I don't think so. Since the card is played a lot, and it is one of the most popular cards in DTK, it is also a good target for speculators to invest in. The price tag on Dragonlord Ojutai might be a bit high, and could very well come down towards the release of MM2015; a time when investors want to free up some value to invest with.

#2 Pendelhaven +26.4% ($17.51)

Pendelhaven

Be aware: the rise of Pendelhaven is up, but in a post-spike chaos. When a card from a really old set spikes, you almost always see the markets respond in the way they do with Pendelhaven. Because the supply is so low, there is little real trade. Therefore the prices will differ more, and are influenced more easily. But what you can say about this 'chaos' is that there is trade going on every day, and that means that the card is still popular and that it is retaining it's +-$17 value.

When you view Pendelhaven's reprint in Time Spiral, you see this reflected, the price of that printing is going steadily up:

And if you ask yourself why this card is popular, you probably don't play Modern or Legacy. Both formats feature a infect deck that is a good budget or entry-level deck you can start your eternal career with. In Legacy, Pendelhaven sees play in the Elves archetype as well.

#3 Savor the Moment +13.8% ($4.53)

Savor the Moment

Savor the Moment is also up this week, but also in a post-spike market. In week 13 it spiked up to almost $6, but went down almost immediately after, which is typical for a speculator driven spike.

The card was featured in some brews over the past years, but not with a lot of success. But consider this: the card is one of the cheapest non-Time Walk time walks. Being unable to untap still grants you an extra turn, but the card has not been broken in such a way yet, that it is effective enough to use in competitive play.

Just like with Pendelhaven, the fact that Savor the Moment is back in the weekly winners does mean that there is trade going on. Cards that really fall from grace will either plummet or slowly dwindle. But this is certainly not the case with Savor the Moment

Vendilion Clique -1.71% ($69.99)

Vendilion Clique

Yesterday Louis-Scott Vargas reviewed the reprint of Vendilion Clique and announced the playmat of GP Vegas. And the big news is: Vendilion Clique will be reprinted as a Mythic rare, and will have an alternate art. And the big question is: will the card drop in price, and if it does, how much?

It sparked many debates on twitter and other social media, but I could not see any consensus among players and traders. My guess is that the price of the original printing will go down, but not by that much. The reprint will end up a tad lower than the original, but not by much either. But who am I to judge/ predict, since no one really can. My guess is that the fact that the reprint is a mythic and a very popular card, paves the way for the  new copy of the card to have it's own unique value.

Also, check out the effect of the reprint of Vendilion Clique in Modern Masters (also as a Mythic):

The reprint started out $8 lower than the original, but crept up in the months after, until the prices were the same. Right now, prices of both printings are exactly the same. Initially a gradual price drop was visible, until the rise in price up until now. Vendilion Clique has lost only $1,71 until now. With this info, I hope to give you enough to make up your own mind on this!

More from Peter:

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Ethereal Forager Stifle Allosaurus Shepherd

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
