Weekly Winners (51)

18 Dec
by Peter

This week has (almost) no surprises at all. Both the weekly winner and the runner up have been winners before. And that is a good reflection of the MTG finance market at this time: slow and dull. But, again, just in time for FNM, I'll tell you what cards will be the talk of the town tonight.

#1 Whip of Erebos +38.9% ($3.99)

Whip of Erebos

Last week, Whip of Erebos was up 23.5%, this week it stacks another +24.3 on that. And with that, Whip of Erebos is the #1 winner this week.

For more on Whip of Erebos, check out last week's winners.

#2 Choke +17.3% ($4.20)

Choke

Choke

Choke is the crossformat sideboard card that spiked in week 49. And there seems to be some heavy trade going on, pushing the price up and down. So keep your eye on this one.

If you care to know why Choke is hot, check out week 49's winners.

#3 Pendelhaven +11.3% ($7.10)

Pendelhaven

Pendelhaven is the only weekly winner that has not been in the top 3 before. This evergreen card from legends is gaining value steadily with some heavy trading in the past few weeks. And this week it almost back at it's all time high that was set on December 5.

The card is hot because of both Modern and Legacy. Both formats feature infect decks that are extremely aggressive and fast. In Legacy the Berserk Stompy deck has netted some good results over the past month. In the legacy format, Pendelhaven is also played in the elves archetype.

Modern has it's own version of infect, and it also runs Pendelhaven. And an infect deck won the SCG Premier IQ in Atlanta in September, putting the deck and (among other cards) Pendelhaven in the spotlight.

Cheap pickup of the week: Misdirection  ($11.17) ALL TIME LOW

Misdirection

Back in may it was at its all time high, but now it is only half as valuable. You know what happened? Conspiracy. Right after this card got a reprint, it plummeted in value.

But, at the same time Misdirection fell from grace in Legacy. The card saw play in the Sneak and Show deck, functioning mainly as a pseudo Force of Will. But also nice for shenanigans against discard spells, targeted burn and storm combo.

Also interesting this week

Check out these cards that are on the move this week. Either going up, or down, but always interesting to know!

Flooded Strand (+5.4%)

Flooded Strand

Not a weekly winner, but this is a very interesting development. I am watching the KTK fetch closely and at this time Flooded Strand seems to be creeping up.

More from Peter:

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

Weekly Winners 2021 - 12

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, our interest page looks like normal for a change! Many (huge) spikes from different sets and eras. I choose to see this as an omen of better times ahead!

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Weekly Winners 2021 - 10

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

Ethereal Forager Stifle Allosaurus Shepherd

Weekly Winners 2021 - 07

An interesting week, again driven by old card speculation and EDH. But we also have a special edition of Cheap Pickups, with a new way to look at cards that are (still) cheap pickups, but might go up later.

Shivan Dragon Sapphire Medallion Elvish Champion

Weekly Winners 2021 - 05

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
