Hidden Gems for Omo, Queen of Vesuva

Welcome to Hidden Gems, where we explore the depths of Magic’s deep, deep well of cards to find underappreciated or overlooked cards for Commander. With Modern Horizons 3 now on the scene, we are blessed with some new popular cards and the new queen of my heart, Omo.

Omo, Queen of Vesuva’s power might not be apparent at first blush. Obviously, she interacts with creature types and land types, but upon further inspection, her synergies seem almost endless. Here are my five picks for cards that you might want to include that will make your Omo deck veer off in a more personalized direction.

#1. Bring to Light

The original Commander rules didn’t allow you to add mana colors that did not belong in your commander’s identity. But that all changed a few years ago. Since Omo turns your lands into every land type (not just nonbasic types), your lands will have access to all five colors. That opens up a few mechanics for us, like Domain, Sunburst, and Converge. Unfortunately, there are no standout Sunburst cards to include, but Bring to Light lets you Converge for all five colors in a two-color deck. Nifty! And maybe you want to cast a Sphinx of Clear Skies to keep the “five-color” synergies going.

#2. Dismiss into Dream

Tell me, if a queen commits a crime, is it really a crime? Omo’s ability doesn’t have to target your stuff. It can target your opponents’ creatures and lands too! That’s a crime, which can trigger cards like Freestrider Lookout or Dismiss into Dream to get rid of big threats and pesky blockers. And getting to that seven mana couldn’t be easier when playing a blue/green deck with an emphasis on land.

#3. Gor Muldrak, Amphinologist

Sure, you can turn your team into changelings to take advantage of cards like Master of the Pearl Trident. That’s all fine and dandy (and makes Omo unblockable). OR you could bewitch your opponents’ creatures and give yourself protection from Salamanders. You tell me which one sounds more fun. Everyone loves the guy handing out Salamanders. But tricks on them, they can’t block Omo or do damage to you while Gor Muldrak is around.

#4. Scourge of Fleets

If all your lands are Islands (thanks Omo), this little Kraken can bounce your opponents’ creatures, leave yours intact, and give you a 6/6 to boot! Omo trends in the direction of combo and control, and Scourge of Fleets helps take advantage of the everything counters while buying you time to set up a combo or control the board. Bless you, little Kraken. And thank you for your service.

#5. Trenzalore Clocktower

Not a lot of cards can refill your hand for what is essentially free. You just need 12 counters and a Time Lord. Omo has that second part covered, and using this land to get mana will net you counters along the way. Admittedly, 12 is a lot and the counters don’t add up as quickly as Midnight Clock. However, swapping out an Island for this card puts the opportunity cost at an all-time low. Plus, you could always go infinite with something like Magus of the Candelabra, Wirewood Lodge (after turning the Magus into an Elf), and big mana producers like the Urza lands or Baldur's Gate. The possibilities are endless!

That’s all for this edition of Hidden Gems. Here’s to many games of you and Omo doing wacky stuff and falling deeper and deeper in love. I know that’s what I’ll be doing.
