Weekly Winners 2018 - 46

This week's winner is a mystery and the other two are Ultimate Masters related. Also: BLACK FRIDAY!

#1 Myojin of Seeing Winds $4.97 (+170.11%)

Myojin of Seeing Winds

Myojin of Seeing Winds is a complete mystery to me. By digging hard and deep I can almost always find an explanation for a recent card spike. Well, with Myojin of Seeing Winds that's not the case. At all. Over the past week there has been no chatter about Myojin of Seeing Winds on any forum, on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit or any other publicly accessible online source. Even on know speculators' sites there has been no mention of the card. The only things I could dig up were our own MTGStocks tweets, those of price sharing bots online and some random players' EDH list op tappedout. I even tried searching for "msow mtg"; just to be sure that this card with a long name is only talked about with some hipster abbreviation. It's not.

All I can report is that Myojin of Seeing Winds is out of stock in the major US card stores at the moment. And those who have copies available have just a few in stock. This happens more often, but then there is a reason, a certain group of speculators at work, a recent article by some pro-player or name any other viable reason. Even in EDH, there are just a handful of decks playing the card.

So, if you have any idea why Myojin of Seeing Winds spiked... be my hero and share your explanation!

#2 Manamorphose $16.99 (+54.31%)

Manamorphose

Manamorphose already reached a record high last week, but gained another 54% this week. And please note that Manamorphose is an uncommon. And its original printing from Shadowmoor was a common and now has a $13 price tag. That's insane in both instances. Sure, the print runs of Shadowmoor and Modern Masters were not huge, compared to Guilds of Ravnica and other recent sets. But still, there are many, many copies of the card around.

The card spiked this week because it is not reprinted in Ultimate Masters. It will probably be printed in another set in the coming years, but for now the message is: the supply won't get bigger. And that means something for a card that is a staple in both Modern and Legacy and sees a lot of play.

#3 Surgical Extraction $34.56 (+32.77%)

Surgical Extraction

Surgical Extraction is one of the most widely played sideboard cards in Modern and Legacy. Over the past weeks, Surgical Extraction saw play regular in at least 15 different archetypes in those two formats. Usually a one or two-off in sideboards, it protects you from all kinds of threats that come from the graveyard or have counterparts that are still in the deck and need to be removed. And once in a while, making your opponent shuffle his/her deck can steal you a game (but that's not a reason why it sees play in sideboards).

Since Surgical Extraction has a Phyrexian mana symbol, it can only be reprinted in sets that feature phyrexians. And even then, Wizards will probably think long and deep before printing new cards with phyrexian mana symbols, since they tend to be so powerful. Most realistically, Surgical Extraction will be reprinted in a masters set. And since it is not in Ulitmate Masters, we will have to wait for the next masters set to be printed. But wait! Ultimate Masters is the last Masters set Wizards will print! That fact means that there is no realistic way Surgical Extraction gets a reprint.

But don't despair. It might be included in a Duel Deck, become a Promo or get reprinted in whatever thing Wizards comes up with to replace the Masters Series. With a high MSRP and a lot of demand, Wizards will probably have something new in mind. I really wonder what this fresh cash cow will turn out to be!

More from Peter:

Weekly Winners 2021 - 36

Just like last week, the Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt spoilers are the main factor of influence on the markets this week. There are enough cards spoiled for the brewing to commence and we expect a lot more movement in the coming weeks!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

Catalyst Stone Daybreak Ranger Oboro, Palace in the Clouds

Weekly Winners 2021 - 13

This week we saw a lot of interesting movement. Most of it caused by Strixhaven spoilers, but the old frame fetchlands spiked as well.

Deserted Temple Mox Tantalite Windswept Heath

Chain of Smog Illumination Magma Sliver

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

Selective Memory Pearl Medallion Zombie Master

Weekly Winners 2021 - 08

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.

A strange and eventful week in the world of finance. Where you'd expect tons of cards to spike due to new brews, we mainly see a new hausse of reserved list cards being bought out. And also non-reserved list cards that happen to be MTG classics.
