Weekly Winners 2020 - 36

Through the forest of Reserved List buyouts we see some very interesting movers this week. EDH, Modern and Spoiler driven winners. This weekly winners felt a bit like a normal week in Magic.

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

See something interesting in the world of card prices? Be sure to pitch me a tweet: @MTGPeter

#1 Edgewalker $10 (+825.93%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Edgewalker

Our #1 winner this week is a 'good old' speculative buyout. The Corona crisis has changed a lot of things, but speculators keep speculating, based on the new spoilers for Zendikar Rising this week.

Edgewalker is an uncommon from the last block where Cleric Tribal was a thing. Only printed in Scourge, the number of available copies is limited, compared to the uncommons printed in recent sets. A buyout is quickly organized as we have seen this week.

Edgewalker caught the eye of speculators soon after it became known that Zendikar Rising would feature Clerics. It was no surprise that the day after that we saw Edgewalker spiking hard.

The reason behind this buyout is straightforward. Check out this new spoiler: Cleric of Life's Blood. With Edgewalker in play, you can play it for free. But since the card is so old, the only format for which this is interesting is EDH. And if Zendikar Rising features a new Cleric Commander, Edgewalker might go up even more.

Edgewalker already sees a little bit of play in EDH, in decks that feature Shadowborn Apostle. Since your deck can have any number of those creatures, they are easy to get into play for free with Edgewalker. But who knows, EDH might get an additional Cleric deck in the coming weeks!

#2 Boil $4.95 (+98%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Boil

As of today, 7 out of the top 10 decks in Modern play islands. Those decks are not completely reliant on basic lands, but destroying all your opponent's islands might give you the break you need to tilt the board state in your favor.

Across tiers, about 10 decks play Boil in their sideboards. Top users are Gruul Midrange, Jund and Goblins. But outside of Modern, Boil does not see much play. Some use the card in EDH Land Destruction decks.

Boil was reprinted in 6th, 7th and 8th edition, and after that only as a Amonkhet Invocation. The Tempest printing has spiked this week, but all other copies have shown an upward movement as well.

Considering the low print run of Tempest and the decent amount of play Boil sees in sideboards, it is no wonder the card is trending up. Also, the Tempest printing is the only black bordered printing available. And its 8th edition counterpart the only one with a new card frame.

Boil's spike is most probably the result of an organic buyout of the card and the amount of available copies drying up. Its market price is moving up a bit, but not as much as you would expect.

#3 Cabal Coffers $86.89 (+7.50%) - ALL TIME HIGH

Cabal Coffers

Over the past year, I have passed on writing about Cabal Coffers more than 10 times. It was featured in our 2019 top 100 winners list on January 1, but it never made it into the Weekly Winners. Every time I considered it, it was just under the top winners that week, and there was always a better card to cover.

Also, as you can see when you click on Cabal Coffers and view the card page: it has been going up and down for more than a year. But its trend is up, up, up!

But this week it is Cabal Coffers' time to shine. This is probably no surprise to anyone that plays EDH, because it is an extremely popular card in that format. And no wonder, it is extremely powerful since it nearly doubles your available mana.

That's not only useful for getting your commander back in play, but also to pay for X-costed cards and expensive abilities on your commander or other permanents.

Cabal Coffers has two printings. One from Torment with and old border and one from Planechase with a new border. Both cards are equally priced (looking at their Market Prices).

But before you think that Cabal Coffers is forever out of your reach budget-wise, consider that it can easily get a reprint in an upcoming Commanders or other special set. Outside of that, Cabal Coffers does not have particular plane-specific characteristics, so in theory it could even get a reprint in a standard legal set. Chances of that are slim, since it makes the card available for Modern and Pioneer. And it might just enable the kind of decks that Wizards would like to see less.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Keranos, God of Storms $6.01 - Record low and going down hard

Somewhat of an odd week. Not really any spikes that has one really obvious or notable reason and of course still a lot of older cards moving up.

The most interesting week in a long, long time! Maybe I'm a but biased due to my love for Legacy, but this week that format is the biggest driving factor behind the three weekly winners.
