Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Overlord of the Balemurk $24.35 (+142%)

This Avatar Horror is a new mythic from Duskmourn: House of Horror and is part of the Overlord cycle. This cycle of Enchantment Creatures can be either played for their mana cost, in which case they'll enter as you'd expect, but can also be played for their Impending cost. This cost is a discount, but it won't be a creature until later. But each of these cards in the cycle have an enters-the-battlefield ability. In the case of Overlord of the Balemurk you get to mill four cards and then return a non-Avatar creature or planeswalker from your graveyard to your hand.

Overlord of the Balemurk has been going up this past week as it's been showing up in Pioneer Greasefang, Okiba Boss. Being able to mill four cards and return a useful creature back to your hand is pretty good in these decks that want to put Vehicles in their graveyard. We also sometimes see four copies of Say Its Name appear in this deck, depending on the build, to mill yourself and get a creature or land card back, and even includes Altanak, the Thrice-Called as a one-off in case you want to put it into play with Say Its Name.

Overlord of the Balemurk has also shown up in Pioneer Enigmatic Incarnation decks and it's being experimented with in Modern and even Legacy. Unshockingly, it also sees quite a bit of play in Standard.

#2 Sunscour $9.99 (+80%)

This rare from Coldsnap is a sweeper for seven mana, but fortunatelly you can also exile two white cards from your hand instead of paying the mana cost. This type of card is also generally referred to as a "pitch spell," of which there are several more in the game. Of course we all know Force of Will as a popular example, and there are many types of these pitch spells, with a whole cycle for exiling two cards printed in Coldsnap. When we look at that particular cycle we have other cards that are or were popular at some point, like Fury of the Horde, Soul Spike, and Allosaurus Rider.

Sunscour has been picking up steam because of Bant Ritual decks in Modern where Sunscour is seen as three-of in the sideboard. These decks revolve around Birthing Ritual, and they try to chain different creatures together that all have a strong enters abilities.

#3 Hellish Rebuke $5.00 (+52%)

Daddy Valgavoth strikes again! Here's another card spiking because of the very popular commander Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. Hellish Rebuke is an instant for three mana that gives your opponents' permanents a rather unique ability. Whenever one of these permanents deal damage to you, the person who cast Hellish Rebuke, it has to be sacrificed and the owner loses two life.

This "loses two life" part is especially good with Valgavoth, since that will grow it and let you draw a card. As I mentioned, we've seen many cards go up by now because of this new commander. Two weeks ago we saw spikes for both Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin and Great Unclean One. And two weeks before that the Reserved List card Forsaken Wastes was mentioned in our Weekly Winners.

It remains to be seen whether these cards will hold their current pricepoint, but these definitely seem to be quite the hype at the moment.

#4 The GAMBL Report

Welcome to the GAMBL Report! The Guessing About Magic Bans Lifting section of this week's article where we'll show you the prices going up of cards that have been on the Commander banned list since forever. As we discussed last week, the Commander Rules Committee announced that it was dissolving and giving management of the Commander format to the game design team of Wizards of the Coast. It was also mentioned that Wizards intends to reevaluate the current banned list. So here we are! People are now GAMBLing on certain cards coming off the banned list soon, which has prices spiking.

Let's look at a few of them!

Biorhythm $8.37 (+327%)

Primeval Titan $16.50 (+189%)

Coalition Victory $6.75 (+88%)

Hullbreacher $6.20 (+77%)

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Caduceus, Staff of Hermes $4.95 - Moving up!

Caduceus, Staff of Hermes has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Rootpath Purifier (Extended Art) $3.95 - Moving down

Wrenn and Six $18.33 - Moving down
