We have one winner from Modern, and some speculation for the upcoming sets.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll tell you about the Magic: the Gathering cards that'll be the talk of the town tonight! Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Discord.

TCGplayer Companion

We love TCGplayer and it's clear they've been focussing a lot on their clean and slick design. And while that's absolutely a good thing, we've heard from players who'd rather have some extra information on their website. We've been experimenting with a Chrome and Firefox extension that adds a little bit more information on some screens.

The current features are:

  • Price Data Integration: View MTGStocks market prices, trends, and analytics directly on TCGplayer product pages
  • Price Comparison: Access a sortable table showing market, low, and average prices across all printings of a card
  • Price Trends: Track price movements with 1-day and 7-day change indicators
  • Quick Links: One-click access to MTGStocks, Scryfall, and EDHREC for additional card information
  • Seller Management: Create personal lists of preferred sellers and sellers to avoid, with automatic visual highlighting (green for preferred, red for avoided)
  • Enhanced Search: Detailed price breakdowns in search results, including shipping costs

You can find it in the Chrome Store and the Firefox Add-ons Store (both desktop and mobile). We'd love to get your feedback on whether you feel this can and will be useful and what other features you'd like to see. For the entire thing check out the documentation page.

Onto the Weekly Winners!

#1 Grinding Station $34.89 (+85%)

Grinding Station has been slowly increasing over the past few months. As many players are aware, it's one of those cards that can spike all of the sudden when it becomes popular. It can fill up your graveyard and then untap again when an artifact enters; in Modern this has been an archetype for quite some time already, in combination with Underworld Breach which cares about having a full graveyard to replay the spells, including your cheap mana artifacts to untap the Grinding Station and mill some more. Eventually you can win using Thassa's Oracle with an empty library.

Temur Breach and Four-Color Breach decks are doing really well in Modern at the moment. And one particular artifact was unbanned not too long ago in Modern. Mox Opal is a gamechanger for the deck and enabling its Metalcraft is easy due to the sheer amount of cheap artifacts in the deck.

The problem with Grinding Station lies in its availability. It was only printed in Fifth Dawn, released in 2004, and only recently received a reprint in Mystery Booster 2. But with the new demand, that supply simply may not be enough. That said, when it gets reprinted in a more regular set, I expect the price to come down a lot.

#2 Dragon's Hoard $2.69 (+20%)

This is an odd winner this week. It grabbed my attention when the Starter Commander Decks version of the card showed up in the Interests going up to $15. Rest assured, the card can still be bought for between $2 and $3, but there is a very noticable uptrend happening for most version of the card. And I get why people want a copy. It's got a Dragon theme going on and can provide mana and card advantage.

Dragons are, and probably always have been, a very popular creature type to build around in Commander. And with the Tarkir: Dragonstorm set coming up, which has the sub-line "Fight Dragons with Dragons" on Wizard's own page, we can expect more of these creatures and extra support. If you have a Dragon deck, or want to build one, it may not be such a bad idea to get your copies in of these popular cards before the previews start.

#3 Greasefang, Okiba Boss $4.34 (+40%)

Before we get started, let's be up front about one thing: we are talking about the print of Greasefang, Okiba Boss from the Secret Lair Series. And the Showcase: Outlaws of Thunder Junction drop, to be more exact. You can still get a regular print of Greasefang for $0.50. But while we're talking about special prints, we do see the Showcase variant from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty also moving up for both the regular and foil version.

Searching for the reason of Greasefang's spike isn't that hard. It all has to do with the upcoming Aetherdrift set, which revolves around Vehicles. And while there's definitely a good chance that Greasefang will become better, there's also the possibility that Greasefang will be reprinted. People are speculating that he may appear in the Esper precon deck around Hashaton, Scarab's Fist, which has a discard and graveyard theme going on.

This does explain why the regular version isn't moving up in price, but people are focusing on the special arts and borders that are unlikely to be reprinted.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past seven years. Many cards were even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Star Athlete $3.29 - Moving up!

Star Athlete has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.

Bloodrot Apothecary $5.05 - Moving down

Vesuva $4.20 - Slowly moving down
