Weekly Winners 2021 - 40

We see some price movement due to commander and because of the upcoming World Championship XXVII. So why are prices changing because of an upcoming tournament rather than afterwards? Let's find out. We still see prices from zombies and werewolves go everywhere.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Noxious Ghoul $12.68 (+948%)

Noxious Ghoul

Last week we already did a "Zombies!" special because of all the zombies. As a quick recap: most playable, or scarce, zombies have been quickly going up because of the new support found in the previous Innistrad set, and most likely also in the upcoming Innistrad set. I don't want to get into this same effect this week again, but a zombie going up with almost 950% is something that we probably should discuss.

With Noxious Ghoul in play, you can let each non-Zombie creature get -1/-1 until end of turn every time a zombie enters the battlefield. When you are a bit further into the game it should be very possible to let multiple zombies enter the battlefield. As you know, zombies are pretty good at coming back from the graveyard, or to create zombie tokens in hordes. This way you can clear (a large part of) the board while your army still stands. Remember that giving creatures -1/-1 also gets around those pesky indestructible creatures. Noxious Ghoul also is a good upgrade to the Undead Unleashed Commander deck.

#2 Alrund's Epiphany $17.40 (+54%)

Alrund's Epiphany

I heard extra turns are good! These kind of spells always do well from a financial aspect, and Alrund's Epiphany not only grants you an extra turn, but also gets you two 1/1 flyers that can either attack, but are also very suitable to chump block fatties with. The is steep, but you can foretell it early on in the game, moving it to the exile zone where your opponent's are very unlikely to get rid of it since it can't be discarded anymore.

However, the Magic week would not be complete with some kind of drama. In only a few hours the World Championship XXVII will start where the top 16 players will compete in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Draft and Standard. Players had to register their decks in advance, and... they were accidentally published before the competition. Meaning that all players already exactly know what the competitors will be playing and could potentially practise against these exact decklists.

So why this is relevant is because we see two cards consistently in these decks: Alrund's Epiphany and Esika's Chariot. Of the top sixteen decks, there are only two that aren't running either one of them. But the most common card in these decks is Alrund's Epiphany: 9 out of 16 players play this card. Based on this you can imagine people are trying to get their hands on copies to play them themselves. If the pro-players all so firmly believe in this card, then it must be worthwhile to play, right?

It sees play in Standard Izzet Dragons, Sultai Festival, Bant ramp, Izzet Delver, Azorius Control, and Prismari Midrange. Some people are already speculating this card may get banned in Standard, but we also know how often people like to yell that a card should be banned. So lets not go there yet.

#3 Child of Alara $16.75 (+122%)

Child of Alara

Child of Alara is a Legendary Creature from Conflux. Legendary Creature means: can be your commander! Child of Alara is, or at least has been, a popular commander in cEDH. But this commander was also featured in a Commander's Quarters video last week.

But this deck is not any deck... It is a 99 lands commander deck. This is one of these niche decks that people just love to build because it's quite funny to play with (once). Since Child of Alara already is a popular commander I don't see the price coming down a lot any time soon unless it gets reprinted.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
