Weekly Winners 2022 - 27

Plenty of price movement going around. Of course there is some stuff happening because of commander, and Dragons obviously, but this week I have managed to squeeze in a winner that may be going up because of Legacy play. Prices are also seeming to slowly settle for reprints in Double Masters 2022, but we will have to wait a bit longer to see what cards really took a lasting hit.

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

#1 Molten Echoes $4.66 (+288%)

Molten Echoes

Who doesn't like to get an extra copy of a creature, even for a turn? This is exactly what Molten Echoes does. When it enters the battlefield you get to choose a creature type. Whenever a nontoken creature of the chosen type enters the battlefield under your control, create a token that's a copy of that creature. That token gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step. Since there seems to be a heavy trend the past few weeks in cards around a certain flying creature type, I am going to assume that the creature type that's currently being chosen the most is Dragons.

For you will get this enchantment which enables you to get these extra tokens for a turn. Meaning that if you play a dragon like Scourge of Valkas you get to deal some damage, and get to swing immediately with a 4/4. Or when you play a Lathliss, Dragon Queen, you get to create two 5/5 dragon tokens, and swing with a 6/6 (if you choose to not keep your original Lathliss). In combination with Bladewing the Risen you could potentially win the game on the spot when you combine it with Scourge of Valkas from your graveyard. Probably no coincidence that we find Scourge of Valkas in the Interests as well where it went up with 137%.

I however am a bit surprised to see this version of Molten Echoes shooting up by this much, especially since the version from Commander 2020 seems to be lacking behind a bit in price.

#2 Hivis of the Scale $19.99 (+130%)

Hivis of the Scale

For 5 mana you will get a Viashino Shaman that can tame a Dragon. It has T: Gain control of target Dragon for as long as you control Hivis and Hivis remains tapped. During your untap step you may choose not to untap Hivis of the Scale, meaning you get to keep control of that Dragon.

I think we can be very short about this card. It is on the reserved list and may have been targeted for a buyout as anticipation that more people are likely to be playing Dragon decks. When we look at EDHRec for this card, we see that it is barely played in any deck at all. I personally do not really see the value in this card, since it is niche, costs 5 mana, and is only useful in certain situations.

Now I feel bad for bringing up this card, so I will include a fourth Weekly Winner!

#3 Shadowgrange Archfiend $5.06 (+102%)

Shadowgrange Archfiend

Our next winner is Shadowgrange Archfiend, a rare from the fairly recent Commander: Innistrad: Crimson Vow set. It has when Shadowgrange Archfiend enters the battlefield, each opponent sacrifices a creature with the greatest power among creatures they control. You gain life equal to the greatest power among creatures sacrificed this way. Notably it also has a rather steep Madness cost, as in you get to pay 8 life along with .

Sure, the mana cost is quite high, but if needed and you are able to discard this creature, you can let each opponent sacrifice their strongest (power-wise) creature. If you are able to cast it from your hand you also end up with an 8/4. In the correct build this could definitely pull you a little bit ahead.

The card be found in the Innistrad: Crimson Vow Vampiric Bloodline deck. It seems like this card is picking up a bit of steam since it sees some commander play in Raphael, Fiendish Savior decks, which is a new commander from Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. But besides seeing play in Raphael decks, it also already showed up in decks revolving around Kamiz, Obscura Oculus and Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer.

#4 Maddening Hex $8.35 (+35%)

Maddening Hex

So this card is not at the top of the Interests this week, but I found it a rather interesting card that has nothing to do with Dragons. Well... Nothing to do with Dragons? It does only show up in the Draconic Rage commander deck from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which includes a bunch of Dragons. But the card itself is not necessarily useful with Dragons and the spike also does not seem related to it.

We actually discussed this card back in December when it went up because it is a Curse. Around that time Curses received some extra love in the form of extra support and more curses, meaning the existing ones went up. But what I like about this card, and why I wanted to discuss it, is because it is now also showing up in Legacy Izzet Delver decks. Mostly as sideboard card though.

Usually in competitive Magic words like "at random" are not really good, since you cannot really rely on the outcome, but in this case you will only have one opponent, meaning it will stay on your only opponent. This is confirmed by a ruling found on the Gatherer page: If Maddening Hex is attached to your only opponent, it stays attached to that player as the ability resolves.

Against certain strategies this could win the game on its own. Remember that Legacy is a format that revolves a lot around cheap interaction. When we look at decks like Burn, they often play Eidolon of the Great Revel to punish this cheap interaction. However Maddening Hex will most likely deal more damage, is less conditional, and harder to remove.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
