Another week and another (early) Weekly Winners. This week we see mostly cards moving up because of commander, but our first winner has also a lot do with Modern. Hopefully you enjoy this instalment of the series.
Still on holiday, and like I mentioned it may make these articles a bit more unpredictable when and if they come out. Today is a good example since I am posting this quite a bit more early than usual. Currently my family and I are in Flagstaff, Arizona and will go to Sedona National Park later today. I expect my internet there to be virtually non-existent meaning I have to post the article today. Next week I will be flying home on Thursday/Friday, meaning it is really uncertain whether I am able to post an article. Flying with a toddler quickly wears you down, and when we are home we may have a toddler with a jetlag. Even more fun!
Like every week, but unfortunately not in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!
Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.
So before we get started with this week's winners, lets quickly address the two top risers this week: Lord of the Undead and Toothy, Imaginary Friend (Borderless). According to the interests they went up with almost 50.000% to, respectively, $24922 and $12411. As you can see on the Interests, they are flagged with a warning that these price points may not be correct. And this is indeed the case. These cards are obviously not nearly worth this much, but a vendor listed them for insanely high prices ($49785 and $24794). I have heard vendors sometimes do this because they do not have the card in stock and its easier to change the price later than to remove it from inventory and re-add it later. Or sometimes it is an human error and it was a listing mistake. Regardless, this is a good lesson to always also look at the market price of a card if available. For these two cards in particular that can be a bit harder since they are in the Secret Lair August Superdrop and have not been shipped yet.
This Mythic was released in Modern Horizons 2. It is a 4/4 for only 12 mana and gives each creature you control vigilance if it's white, hexproof if it's blue, lifelink if it's black, first strike if it's red, and trample if it's green. But it gets cheaper when you have more basic land types in play, making it cheaper for each basic land type. The card has Domain that takes care of this effect. And where have we seen more of this keyword recently? Exactly, in Dominaria United. This has made the card more popular since it can be easily slotted into commander decks that already run five colors.
So which decks are most popular in five colors? Well, with the release of Jodah, the Unifier and Jared Carthalion we see that these kind of decks become more popular and Scion of Draco being colorless and being able to buff your board with abilities, is an easy include. But since it also is a Dragon, it already also was a popular include in Dragon decks around, for example, The Ur-Dragon.
But that's not the entire story I guess. Scion of Draco also quickly found its way in Calibrated Blast Modern decks. Not so much to actually play, but more because of its high mana value. The deck does have potential to have all 5 basic land types in play, and thus hardcasting it, but being able to use it for 12 instant damage to the face also seems like a good deal. But that's not it, it has recently also found its way into Modern Domain Zoo decks along with newer cards Nishoba Brawler and Leyline Binding.
Scion of Draco was also recently added to The List and is currently listed at $28. I am going to assume this price is inflated and while I can see people spending a bit more on that version than the regular retro frame version, the difference should not be that high. I expect it to stabilise soon.

Years ago I built a casual 60 card Samurai deck, and to be honest, it was bloody awful. If given enough time it was relatively unstoppable, but other decks definitely should have won or taken over the board before that happened. It basically was a pile of Samurai from the old Kamigawa sets along with cards like Time of Need to get what I needed. But it also included copies of Reki, the History of Kamigawa, because it included a bunch of Legendary spells and drawing cards is good, right? That is what Reki, the History of Kamigawa does. Whenever you play a Legendary spell you get to draw a card. If you want to see my awful brewing skills from years ago, I managed to find an old deck list! It is below.
It is no secret that Dominaria United has a bunch of new Legendaries and Legendary support, and we also see more Legendaries in the newer Kamigawa sets. Last week, for example, in the Weekly Winners we see Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful go up because of this same effect. Cards that care about legendaries are moving up and finding their way into commander decks.
Trying not to repeat myself too much, but again cards like Jodah, the Unifier has really driven the prices of these cards. But also cards like Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary often have a copy of Reki in the 100. But also decks around Kethis, the Hidden Hand like to see Reki to get some extra draws.

And more price hikes because of Commander. Plainly put, Erebos, God of the Dead is a good card. For you get an indestructible enchantment that prohibits your opponents from gaining life. And for and 2 life, you can draw a card. You can even do this multiple times as long as you have mana and life to pay. And if your devotion to black is high enough, it will also become a 5/7 creature. Not bad.
But now with the printing of Sheoldred, the Apocalypse we see this card becoming more popular again. Sheoldred will make sure you don't really card about that 2 life. Because whenever you draw a card, you gain 2 life. So for each, you get to draw a card. Pretty good! Sheoldred has been making waves in both Standard and Pioneer too, but we see more cards moving up because of this card. A few weeks back in our Weekly Winners we talked about Seizan, Perverter of Truth for example.
But Erebos, God of the Dead has also found its way into other commander decks with newer commanders like Zur, Eternal Schemer and Verrak, Warped Sengir.

Cheap Pickups
Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
Ob Nixilis, the Fallen has been identified by the MTGStocks Premium Penny Stocks feature as a card that has reached its bottom and is starting a consistent uptrend.
