Weekly Winners 2020 - 49

by Arjen

This week is again a seamless continuation of the past weeks. It's all EDH that drives the markets. The Commander Legends spoilers are sinking in and people are busy brewing new decks. Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Pariah's Shield $9.99 (+91%)

Pariah's Shield

Pariah's Shield definitely isn't new and is well known to be able to have interactions with Stuffy Doll where all damage dealt to you will be dealt to the chosen opponent instead. With the printing of Brash Taunter we have a new creature that we can equip the shield to. But Brash Taunter was printed in Core 2021 and it seems extremely unlikely people are just picking up on this now. So what is the reason for Pariah's Shield to spike?

It seems to be played in EDH with Jared Carthalion, True Heir. When you equip Pariah's Shield to Jared any damage dealt to you will be dealt to Jared instead. That damage gets prevented by Jared's ability and even nets him that many +1/+1 counters. We see EDH decks popping up with Jared and multiple of these interactions. Also notable cards we see played with him are Pariah, Guilty Conscience, Brash Taunter, and Stuffy Doll. With this mix of cards you can equip or enchant Jared with a damage redirect effect, but putting Guilty Conscience on your Stuffy Doll can kill one of your opponents immediately if you can put some damage on it.

It seems that of these cards mentioned above, Pariah's Shield is the only one with a single print at rare, making it the hardest one to get a copy of, which may be a reasonable explanation. Guilty Conscience also only has one printing, but is a common.

#2 Final Fortune $48.72 (+90%)

Final Fortune

Seems like Obeka, Brute Chronologist is at it again. Being able to end the turn on the spot gets rid of this nasty "losing the game" clause on Final Fortune. We already discussed this in our Weekly Winners 45 where we saw the same trajectory for Last Chance. As a little update we also saw Last Chance this week in our Interests where it went up with 62% making it $145.

But we did see a new card with the same ability as Obeka come up in the Interests as well: Sundial of the Infinite. Sundial went up with 71% bringing it to $6.99, and I personally was somewhat surprised the card didn't go up sooner. It has been plagued by spikes since mid 2017, but every time it seems to go slightly higher. But also Demonic Pact is going up with 37% to $5.48. Can you spot the similarities by now?

How the mighty have fallen

You may be wondering why there isn't a third winner this week. I don't want to be too repetitive and we see a lot of cards in the interests this week that are already discussed in our Weekly Winners - 48 of last week. Cards like Citadel of Pain (+75%, $7.50), Tectonic Instability (+63%, $10.49), and Stitch in Time (+60%, $9.05). So I had another card in mind that may be worth showing you this week.

Jeweled Lotus - $77.36
Jeweled Lotus

When this card was spoiled in Commander Legends it created a lot of hype. Some people were saying it was way too overpowered, others were saying it is a bad card since it is only good in your opening hand. But nevertheless, people were talking about it, and seeing as EDH is one of the driving factors behind card prices nowadays, there isn't such a thing as bad press. It immediately started pre-selling for $175 with foils slightly below $400.

We now see Jeweled Lotus slowly stabilising around $75 which is only a casual $100 less than a month ago. This is by no means a buying advise since this card really still has to prove its worth. Being a new card it may (and probably will) be reprinted in future commander products, and I have people in the finance community mention they think that may settle around $20 once it gets a reprint.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
