Weekly Winners 2021 - 19

A week not merely driven by Commander! With the first cards revealed from Modern Horizons 2 we also see cards moving because of Modern playability. Also we see the fetchlands reprinted in this set moving downwards. Interesting week!

Like every week, just in time for (digital) FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the (digital) town tonight!

#1 Savra, Queen of the Golgari $25.88 (+661%)

Savra, Queen of the Golgari

This is not the first time we have mentioned Savra, Queen of the Golgari in our Weekly Winners lately, but never as winner herself. Just last week we talked about her being a reason for the price jump of Creakwood Liege.

Witherbloom seems to be a very popular color combination lately in the commander scene, since the past few weeks we have seen multiple spikes in these archetypes. Still the most prominent reasons are new cards from Strixhaven, with Beledros Witherbloom, Dina, Soul Steeper and Valentin, Dean of the Vein in particular.

Creakwood Liege CardKingdom $10.99 TCGPlayer $27.95
Creakwood Liege CardKingdom $11.99 TCGPlayer $19.97
Valentin, Dean of the Vein CardKingdom $2.29 TCGPlayer $1.25
Dina, Soul Steeper CardKingdom $0.25 TCGPlayer $0.27
Beledros Witherbloom CardKingdom $20.99 TCGPlayer $20.00

#2 Counterspell $5.71 (+164%)

Counterspell

This spike was kind of expected, since Counterspell will be reprinted in Modern Horizons 2. So why would a card go up in value when it is reprinted and there will be more copies available? Because of the set it is printed in. Counterspell currently is not legal in Modern since there has never been a copy of it in a set that is legal in the format. However, now that we see a reprint in a Modern legal set, the card will become legal once the set releases.

Don't you worry! There are plenty of copies of Counterspell to go around. It can be bought for less than a dollar if you want to play with them, and chances are you already have a few copies in your collection somewhere. However, people love to bling out their decks and the versions from Mercadian Masques, Tempest, and other old sets are more wanted by these people. This week we also saw the foil Masters 25 version of Counterspell go up to $14 (+230%), and obviously the Judge Promos, Amonkhet Invocation version, and other special prints.

I think this trend should be mentioned, but this should barely have any impact on or prohibits anyone who just wants to play the card in their decks and doesn't care about the art or version that much.

However, because of Counterspell becoming Modern legal, we also see Archmage's Charm go up in value, and is now $14.24 (+87%). There is a good chance control decks becoming more popular, meaning the others cards that will probably see play in these decks also go up in price.

Counterspell
Mercadian Masques CardKingdom $4.99 TCGPlayer $5.71
Tempest CardKingdom $4.49 TCGPlayer $2.24
FNM Promos CardKingdom $59.99 TCGPlayer $78.88
Judge Promos CardKingdom $149.99 TCGPlayer $196.69
Masterpiece Series: Amonkhet Invocations CardKingdom $219.99 TCGPlayer $299.00
Masters 25 CardKingdom $3.99 TCGPlayer $2.25

#3 Wellspring $19.03 (+139%)

Wellspring

Perhaps this card is a gap in my knowledge, but personally I had never seen it before. Wellspring is on the Reserved List, meaning the card will never be reprinted again, and thus we see these cards move up in price occasionally for no good reason. With Wellspring there actually is a reason why it is moving up, and it has to do with the spoilers of Modern Horizons 2.

This week we saw Urza's Saga being revealed. Since it is an Enchantment Land and a Saga, there's a good possibility we will see more of these type of cards in the set, meaning Wellspring may become a decent commander card. Now that being said, I am fairly certain the price is mainly dictated by the Reserved List status of the card, rather than its real playability in the future.

Wellspring CardKingdom $5.49 TCGPlayer $19.03

Fetchlands update

And now the segment you all have been waiting for! Or at least... Well... You didn't know I was going to include this, so it's the segment you didn't even know you wanted! With the fetchlands seeing reprints in Modern Horizons 2 and also in the Secret Lair Series we see some downtrends for them.

Verdant Catacombs

Arid Mesa

Marsh Flats

Misty Rainforest

Scalding Tarn

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
