Yearly Winners 2023: Top Winners and Losers (Part 1)
2023 has been a busy year for Magic and especially the collectors. Wizards continued to flood to market with new product of which the expansion sets all had their own Commander product stapled to it. Over 100 products have been released this past year if we also count all Secret Lair drops, and that doesn't even make 2023 a record year. In these products, we've seen 415 new commanders released into the hands of the players, which in itself does seem logical in the sense that Commander is by far the most popular format that's being played nowadays, and Wizards obviously wants to feed into that. These 415 new commanders make up about 20% of all commanders currently in circulation.
The past year has also had a big influence on all eternal constructed formats. Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper all have had their metas completely altered by new cards. Some notables of which are

MTGStocks Update
This year we changed around a lot in our infrastructure, making sure we're set up for continued growth. The community on the Discord server is growing and becoming more active.
In 2023 we've published a record 203 articles with the hard work of our content manager Andy Zupke. He's been with us for slightly over a year now, and I couldn't be more thankful for the work he's doing. And it obviously wouldn't be possible without our writers who've been posting some amazing work. If you haven't read our top three articles of 2023, then I suggest you give them a read, since they may very well still be relevant!
- Consider the Mongoose by Jason Alt
- Fall 2023 Secret Lair Super Drop by Matt Grezchnik

Yearly Winners
As is our annual tradition, we’re showing you the winners and losers of 2023 in several categories. To make scrolling a little bit easier, I’ve broken each category up into its own separate post. The first post, which you're reading right now, will consist of the overall winners and losers of 2023. Also make sure that, once you're done going through this article, there are two more Yearly Winner articles up at the moment:
Now back to this article. Below you'll find four tables, consisting of the following information:
- Top 100 winners by average price
- Top 100 losers by average price
- Top 100 winners by market price
- Top 100 losers by market price
To make this bunch of data a little bit more clear for you, here are the rules we decided on when calculating them. First, we have excluded all of the older sets with the generally more expensive cards and low trading volume. These are sets like Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, and The Dark. Secondly, if a card was printed in 2023, we'll use the price seven days after the official release of the set. Prerelease prices are known to be inaccurate, with some prices vastly higher than where the cards end up after release. The third rule is that we excluded all serialized cards for the same reason we excluded the old sets.
In the tables below you'll find the Jan 1st column. Please know that when a card was printed during 2023, this column will be the first known price that adheres to the rules above.
