Hidden Gems for Ms. Bumbleflower

Let’s Get Ready to BUMBLE!

Welcome to Hidden Gems, where we dig into Magic’s depths to find overlooked and underappreciated cards for Commander. Ms. Bumbleflower is the mother we all need and has become the most popular commander in recent weeks. And boy does she do it all! Like most mothers. Bless them.

There are many routes you might go with her at the helm—combo, turbofog, value, +1/+1 counters. After some research, here are my top choices for you to consider that you will not see on the front page of Ms. Bumbleflower’s EDHREC page

#1. Vesuvan Duplimancy

Can you imagine anything better than an army of Ms. Bumbleflowers? I can’t. Neither can your enemies. This route would require spells with only one target, which probably means going the tron route—buffing up your bunny until she can deal lethal damage to your opponents. You can use pump spells like Scale Up. If you target your commander, you can give her flying and a +1/+1 counter to get in for seven. That’s 1/3 of the way there for commander damage in one attack. With Vesuvan Duplimancy, you can accrue tons of bunnies, tons of counters, and snatch victory.

You just might want to shut down your opponents with a City of Solitude or the like. Cantrips are your friends and if you really want to fancy up your game with wacky plays, play Everybody Lives! before combo-ing off and casting tons of spells. This will give your opponents hexproof, so they won’t draw cards from Ms. Bumbleflower. They may not lose life, but they will still lose the game to lethal commander damage at the beginning of the next turn. (They take the lethal damage, which counts toward the commander damage total, even if the damage doesn’t cause life loss.)

#2. Kodama of the West Tree

Ms. Bumbleflower modifies your creatures! Don’t forget to look at the modified ability when looking for +1/+1 synergies. My favorite is this sweet Spirit that can help turn all your spells into ramp. Play a spell, modify a creature, swing in with flample (flying and trample), ramp up for the next turn to keep the party going. You can protect your creatures with Silkguard, draw tons with Fathom Mage, and discourage attacks with Spike Weaver. Is there anything +1/+1 counters can’t do? Other than rent a car, obviously.

#3. Spelltwine

There are loads of cards that can net you at least two spells and trigger Ms. Bumbleflower for the second time and draw you two cards. Just make sure they say that you “cast” them. Otherwise, they will not trigger the bunny mama.

Several mechanics do this on their own, like Cascade, Discover, Flashback, and Adventure. But then there are individual cards like Spelltwine that can be quite powerful, but pack an extra punch when they also draw you two cards and get you two counters. Keep an eye out for them in your deckbuilding.

#4. Solitary Confinement

If you’re going the route of group hug, creating your own pillow fort for protection might be necessary to secure the win. You know the usual suspects, like Propaganda. But if your deck is good at drawing cards (which your commander helps with), then Solitary Confinement can put in a lot of work. You don’t take damage? Great. Opponents can attack each other. You have shroud? Awesome. No more pesky targeting effects. In my experience, this card can scare people into believing that innocent, little you is the biggest threat, so you might want to consider something less scary, like Island Sanctuary.

#5. Primeval Bounty

If your commander is going to reward you for casting spells, it’s worth looking at other cards that also reward you for the same thing. Afterall, you want to cast lots of spells. Primeval Bounty makes sure that everything you do comes with a little bonus (see also: Fable of Wolf and Owl). Creatures, counters, and life can create a lot of value and help you through to the endgame. Put that in your Bumbleflower’s sharepot and smoke it!
