Hidden Gems for Storm, Force of Nature

The age of Universes Beyond is upon us. Magic’s first venture into the world of Marvel took the form of four Secret Lairs. Despite the difficulty in purchasing said Lairs, Storm, Force of Nature has proven to already be a popular choice among those creating new brews.

Fittingly, she grants a spell storm after dealing combat damage. Lists include ways to double up on this powerful ability by granting her double strike, creating multiple combat steps, and taking extra turns - if you want to be that guy. Step one is to get Storm onto the battlefield. Step two is to deal combat damage. But step three is when the brewing starts. Here are five potentially overlooked cards that you might want to consider for your build.

#1. True Polymorph

Dealing with opponents’ commanders can be a troublesome task. Destroying or exiling them is only a temporary solution. Long gone is the strategy of tucking them into your opponent’s library through cards like Oblation and Spin into Myth. Adventures in the Forgotten Realms gave us this special, little spell that transforms pesky creatures or artifacts into less pesky permanents on the battlefield. Enjoy turning an Atraxa into a mana rock or The Ur-Dragon into a mana dork. With Storm’s storm, you can take the battlefield by storm.

#2. Ruinous Intrusion

The well of artifact and enchantment removal gets deeper and deeper as the years go by. This instant from Commander: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt plays nicely with a commander that you’re already trying to use to do combat damage. If your deck is already crafted to break through lines of blockers, you may as well add a little Voltron spice to your spells to see if Storm can bulk up and kill through commander damage. I wouldn’t want to mess with an omega-level mutant after she exiles a Blightsteel Colossus and uses it as armor.

#3. Auton Soldier

I don’t usually support identity theft, but I will support Auton Soldier and all their crimes. There are several ways to copy a legendary creature without them dying to the legend rule, including Irenicus's Vile Duplication, Quantum Misalignment, and Sakashima the Impostor. Auton Soldier stands out because it not only gives you one extra Storm, but myriad means that your Storm copy makes Storm copies which gives a spell many instances of storm that all copy the following spell. Is that confusing?

#4. Early Harvest

If we’re going big, we’re gonna need big mana. Early Harvest can untap your basic lands, and with storm, you can tap them for mana between untap copies to generate loads of mana. The alternative to this card is Rude Awakening, which untaps all lands, but Early Harvest has the advantage of being cheaper and serves as a decent duplicate effect.

#5. Reap

The limitations of only scaling with black permanents one opponent controls might scare you off. It might do nothing, depending on something that is completely out of your control. But in a game with three opponents, one is bound to be playing black. It costs the same as Regrowth, but Reap has the wonderful advantage of being an instant. Use it to grab loads of cards to ramp up a big storm turn, including whatever spell you wish to actually give storm to.
