This week we have some price movements due to Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and commander. A nice mix of cards, and we see Innistrad: Midnight Hunt slowly having some impact on prices as people are getting ready for the new set. Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!
Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.
People have finally realised it: Dress Down is a good card! Percentage wise the card went up quite a lot, but absolute dollar value wise it is "only" a few bucks. We see it being played in Modern, Legacy, and Vintage, and also some commander play. Enough reason for the card to go up in value.
Dress Down is quite unique, since it is an enchantment with Flash. When it is on the battlefield creatures lose all abilities, but you have to sacrifice it at the beginning of the end step. But that's not it, you also get to draw a card and thus "replaces" itself in your hand. And all that for only .
In Modern we see it being played in Grixis Death's Shadow decks where it interacts nicely with the namesake card. When you have Death's Shadow in play, along with Dress Down you have a 13/13 creature ready to smack some face. But when you have Dress Down into play, you can also play Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger for only and it will stay into play ready so attack next turn. But Dress Down can also be used as hate for your opponent's creatures to make sure they don't get their enter the battlefield triggers for example. Or make your opponent's Urza's Saga Constructs pretty useful 0/0 creatures.
In Legacy Bant Miracles we see the card to have an answer for... Urza's Saga. It seems that card is taking over Legacy as well. Of course it also interacts well with Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. But we also see it seeing play in Phyrexian Dreadnought decks. A 12/12 trample for ? Yes, please!
This rare from Conspiracy: Take the Crown is going up. It is another card that is a good upgrade to the Planar Portal commander deck, and also a good inclusion anyway for Prosper, Tome-Bound decks. But we also see it getting play with a different card from the Planar Portal deck: Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant. Both cards play nicely in the same theme.
Every week when writing this article I have to make choices on which cards I do and do not discuss. Simply taking the top 3 winners is not really interesting, since occasionally that's just three reserved list cards. So I try to pick the cards that may be most interesting or are most notable. Last week Flamekin Harbinger also went up quite a lot, but at that time I felt there were three other cards that had a better, or lesser known, story than Flamekin Harbinger. However, the card kept creeping up and is again in the interests this week, and maybe this time it does deserve a spot.
The reason for the spike is, just like last week, that 5 color elementals keep putting up results in Modern. The card sees play often as 4 off and only has two "regular" prints. The first one was in Lorwyn, and saw a reprint later in Planechase. Both sets were not as widely sold as sets are today, meaning there's a relatively low supply. Of course it got a reprint in the Mystery Boosters, but how much that has added to the total supply is still not really known.
Tutors are often popular since they can fix your combo or interaction. Especially in a deck with just elementals, having a one mana tutor on a 1/1 body, seems to be an easy include.
Relentless Dead is not a new card that nobody knew about. It is a popular card in commander in any type of zombie build. But the main reason for it to suddenly go up is a bit more mundane. We are about to embark on a journey to an Innistrad set twice, which most likely means a lot of undead cards and more interaction for these zombie strategies. Brraaaaiiiinnnssss.....
Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.
Arjen has been playing Magic since the Ice Age set released. He primarily plays Legacy format and founded MTGStocks over a decade ago when he and his friends wanted to track card prices to purchase singles at optimal times.
