Weekly Winners 2022 - 01

by MTGStocks

First and foremost I would like to wish each and every one of you a happy 2022. Hope you managed to have a great NYE and were able to spend it with your loved ones. The first week of 2022 was pretty timid Magic finance wise. It kind of makes sense that people have plenty of stuff to do and recover from the holidays to really be bothered with buying cardboard. But I managed to scrape some cards together for you to see this week!

Like every week, just in time for FNM, I'll now tell you about the cards that will be the talk of the town tonight!

Come discuss this week's price movements with us on Reddit.

Premium Peak Preview

In 2021 we successfully launched MTGStocks Premium and new features are being developed for it. The limited time offer currently is still active and may be worth checking out at the Premium page. One of the new features being developed are the "Penny Stocks". Here is a little preview for Protean Hydra from Magic 2011 (M11) that seems to be done dipping and is starting to make its move back up.

#1 Curiosity Crafter (Extended Art) $15.58 (+70%)

Curiosity Crafter (Extended Art)

This card has been showing up a bit more the past few weeks on the Interests, but kept falling short of making the Weekly Winners. This week there is no going around it and has to be addressed! Curiosity Crafter, and especially the Extended Art version) has shot up. But to be fair the difference in price between the regular version and the extended art seems to be quite minimal.

Curiosity Crafter (Extended Art) is a great upgrade to the Spirit Squadron commander deck and is also played around new commander decks around Millicent, Restless Revenant. Besides that it seems to be an auto-include in Donal, Herald of Wings decks and we also see it show up a bunch in Geralf, Visionary Stitcher decks.

#2 Crumbling Sanctuary $3.66 (+41%)

Crumbling Sanctuary

This artifact rare from Mercadian Masques seems to be the next victim of the ever-hungry Umbris, Fear Manifest commander. In the past few weeks we have discussed this card several times where it was responsible for card going up. Examples of these cards are Gravestorm and Planar Void. In this case we see a rare from a set printed in 1999 with no new (tournament legal) reprints, meaning the card does not have a supply you would see for new rares. This makes it easier to drive the price up since there are only so many to go around.

With Crumbling Sanctuary on the table you and your opponents no longer take damage, but exile that many cards from the top of their library instead. And like I mentioned above Umbris, Fear Manifest loves to have your opponents' cards in exile. It can actually help make your Umbris large enough to empty your opponents' library when it deals damage.

#3 Game of Chaos $7.20 (+28%)

Game of Chaos

On November 18th 2021 the Secretversary Superdrop 2021 was announced and for the first time ever, it includes a full commander deck in the Heads I win, Tails You Lose bundle. It contains 10 new arts and "reversible cards". The decklist is inspired by Gavin Verhey's coin flip commander deck with Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom and Okaun, Eye of Chaos as commanders.

The sale has ended over two weeks ago and the consensus is that the deck was pretty popular, meaning people will soon get their hands on it and may want to prepare to make some changes and/or upgrades. A few weeks ago we already saw Frenetic Efreet being bought out as a result, but that one being on the reserved list made it quite an easy target. This week we also see Game of Chaos going up and this is likely because of this deck.

Since the text on the card is rather small, here is the newer oracle text: Flip a coin. If you win the flip, you gain 1 life and target opponent loses 1 life, and you decide whether to flip again. If you lose the flip, you lose 1 life and that opponent gains 1 life, and that player decides whether to flip again. Double the life stakes with each flip.

Is this a good card? Probably not. Is it a fun card? If you like to gamble, yes it is, but if you wouldn't like to gamble then you probably wouldn't play this deck. So I can see why people want to get their copies. Currently the Ice Age print sits at $7.20, but the Fifth Edition print is almost $14.

Cheap Pickups

Please note: for our 'record low' we consider the price of the card over the past 7 years. Many cards have been even cheaper (a) decade(s) ago. Also note: some cards are still going down, and might be even cheaper pickups next week.

Yearly Winners 2022: Top Winners and Losers (Part 1)

2022 has been a busy year for Magic and especially the collectors. The market was flooded by Wizards of the Coast with new product. There have been, among others, four main sets, each having their own commander product, several Universes Beyond sets, Dominaria Remastered, Unfinity, and 70 Secret Lairs. Plenty of new cards hit the market. According to some calculations, almost 15% of all card variations were printed in 2022, and 25% of all commanders in existence were printed this year. Plenty of stuff to look back on!
