Hidden Gems for Obeka
Underplayed Cards for Your Obeka, Splitter of Seconds Deck
She opens up a deck-building vein that is under-tapped, multiplying upkeeps to see what shenanigans you can get up to. There are several avenues one can take, but today I want to share four cards that don’t make the front page of EDHREC. No matter what path Obeka takes you on, give these cards a once over to see how they might fit into your build.
#1. Curse of Unbinding
How about you get a free creature during each one of your upkeeps? You’ll have to “curse” yourself, but depending on what goodies you stuff your deck with, the payoff can be huge. Fair warning though, the noncreature cards revealed this way go to your graveyard. If you play a creature-light build, you might mill yourself to death. Then again, maybe that’s the idea.

#2. Midnight Banshee
This Spirit can help pave the way for Obeka to deal combat damage, but also reap the rewards of extra upkeep steps. She won’t hurt your commander, or other black creatures, so keep that in mind during the deck building phase. This Spirit’s usual charm might go underappreciated when you have to wait a whole turn cycle to get any payoff, but if you know Obeka is gonna do the time warp again, play Midnight Banshee out first and watch her make your opponents’ creatures Wither away.

#3. Infinite Hourglass
This may be more cute than powerful, but I have a soft spot for old artifacts that require a very specific home to find love. If your deck goes wide, the boosted power of all creatures will heavily favor you and let Obeka grant more and more upkeeps as her power grows. Hopefully, the counters pile up quickly and your opponents don’t know if they should spend their turn trying to take them off. Extra points to the players who win with Infinite Hourglass, because who doesn’t like to win with weak and obscure cards? Seriously, does anyone remember this one?

#4. Form of the Dragon
Five damage per upkeep is nothing to sneeze at. Just make sure to shoot down all the fliers that might come your way, because ground creatures will no longer be a problem. Sure, there are more obvious and safer win conditions, but now is your chance to go full Leeroy Jenkins!

That’s all for this edition of Hidden Gems. Just remember, play cards that protect Obeka, let her hit an opponent, and don’t be afraid to alter the fabric of time and space. Nothing bad ever happens to people who do that. And don’t forget to check out our Premium membership for more entertainment and Magic market insights!
