Weekly Winners 2021 - 48

This week we see a lot of movement due to Commander, but I found a card to discuss from Modern as well that was high up on this week's Interests. A lot is going on in Magic world. Unfinity has been announced and a new format will be introduced in Magic Arena. But for now lets discuss the price changes we have seen the past week.

MTGStocks: Premium Updates

Premium was launched a little over two weeks ago and the giveaway has ended! Congrats to the winners! The people who have locked themselves in for the introduction price, for which there are still a few places left, have been kind enough to also provide feedback on the features, meaning that we could improve the Premium functionalities. Some as these improvements are:

• Price alerts for Sealed Product (on top of single cards)
• A new Inventory Import that is customisable by yourself so you can import through IDs from several other websites.
• You can view your last 10 inventory imports and see the result of this import. Makes it easier for you to know what cards could and could not be matched
• Quantity has been added to the Inventory Buylist screen, so you can see how many you currently own
• "Set Price Alert" button on each card page and sealed product

 

#1 Infernal Genesis $10.00 (+843%)

 

I feel this is the first time I have ever seen Infernal Genesis. Not saying that it is that rare to have never seen a card with so many available, but this card does seem like a card that could lead to a lot of fun and chaos at a Commander table. This rare was printed in Prophecy and has never seen a reprint. Since Prophecy was printed in 2000, meaning there are Magic players who weren't even born when this card came out. Myself, for one, already played Magic back then, just to give a glimpse at how old I am.

While I already mentioned that Infernal Genesis could lead to some interesting, fun and chaotic interactions it is mainly picking up steam because of a new commander that can turn the symmetrical aspect of this card into your favor. That commander is Toxrill, the Corrosive, who gives all opponent's creatures -1/-1 for each slime counter on them. But how do they get a slime counter? Well, Toxrill takes care of that as well. At the beginning of each end step you put a slime counter on each creature you don't control. So imagine having Infernal Genesis on the battlefield, the table goes around having their turn and some players end up with a bunch of 1/1 Black Minions. Then it's your turn again, and you play Toxrill, the Corrosive. Now at your end step, all these 1/1s get a slime counter, and thus get -1/-1 and die. So that's it? Not really, because Toxrill has another line of text: you get to create a 1/1 black Slug for each creature that dies that had a slime counter on it. Profit!

We already occasionally saw Infernal Genesis in Commander with Kaervek, the Spiteful, Grismold, the Dreadsower, or even Massacre Girl. But it seems that with Toxrill, the Corrosive it has found its best home yet. Yet I feel the price of this card is mostly determined by its low supply since its an old card without any reprints. It is not on the reserved list or anything, so this price will come crashing down when it does get reprinted.

#2 Grim Hireling $11.99 (+192%)

 

Another black Commander card went up this week. Grim Hireling was printed in the Planar Portal Commander deck. Lately there has been some chatter around this card being exceptionally good in several Commander decks, from where the card has been slowly ticking up.

And we can see why this is a good card. Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, you get to create two Treasure tokens, which can either be used to ramp into your more expensive spells or can be used with Grim Hireling's own ability to give a creature -X/-X and thus acting as repeatable removal. If you can attack multiple players in the same turn (and/or have a double strike creature), the Treasure effect will trigger multiple times.

Popular commanders to play this card in are Thalisse, Reverent Medium, Kalain, Reclusive Painter and Anowon, the Ruin Thief.

#3 Hunted Horror $19.39 (+115%)

 

This card has shown up in a deck-tech from MTG Vegas in a Modern Orb Horrors deck which you can watch on YouTube. The idea of the deck is to get some way into play to stop enter-the-battlefield effects like Torpor Orb or Strict Proctor. This means that when you play creatures like Hunted Horror, Vexing Devil, or Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger their abilities won't trigger and you get all of the upside: a big creature for only a few mana. The deck is not new and has existed already for some years, but with Strict Proctor, Hushbringer and Kroxa it received some new toys to play with.

But Hunted Horror also fits in perfectly well with the previously mentioned Commander Toxrill, the Corrosive or with Umbris, Fear Manifest where the drawback of Hunted Horror will be mitigated.
